Candidate Donald Trump said the number one goal of his administration would be a peace deal between Palestinians and Israelis. He called it the “ultimate deal”. Once elected, Trump’s son-in-law Jarred Kushner and his personal lawyer of twenty years Jason Greenblatt began meeting with Israelis, Palestinians, Jordanians, Egyptians and Saudis. After exhaustive discussions with all parties, the Trump team promised to present an American peace plan. On December 6, 2017, President Trump announced the United States was recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and would be moving its embassy to Jerusalem. This immediately set off a firestorm of negative reaction from the UN, from Europe, from the Arab world, and mostly from the Palestinians.
Now for the critical questions: Why did he do it? Was this an impulsive action or was the move the result of careful, well-thought-out calculation? And finally, where will this action lead?
